Exposure of Sensitive Files in File Sharing Networks

چکیده
Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks continue to rank as some of the most popular Internet applications in use. Their ability to pool the resources of thousands or millions of users makes them extremely attractive for a number of uses. However this convenient and rapid accessibility to files is not without its dangers. In particular, users that accidently or unwittingly share private files can find their personal information rapidly downloaded by anonymous users all over the world. In this work, we investigate the accessibility of a small number of common privacy-sensitive files on the EDonkey2000 and Kad file sharing networks. Our experiences show that with only a minimum of effort, it is possible to find files with highly sensitive personal information. We also highlight some of the privacyand security-related risks associated with the public disclosure of each of these files.

Controlling P2P File-Sharing Networks' Traffic
Since the appearance of Peer-To-Peer (P2P) file-sharing networks some time ago, many Internet users have chosen this technology to share and search programs, videos, music, documents, etc. The total number of P2P file-sharing users has been increasing and decreasing in the last decade depending on the creation or end of some well known P2P file-sharing systems. P2P file-sharing networks traffic...
متن کاملFile Replication Method Based on Demand Forecasting of File Download in P2P Networks
AbstrAct: In peer-to-peer (P2P) networks that support file-sharing services, the level of access demand can vary widely between different files. Since fewer nodes store files for which there is a lower demand, these files are more likely to be lost from the P2P networks if users leave the network or delete the files. File loss can cause users to seek alternatives to P2P services, and lead to de...
متن کاملProposal and Evaluation of a Cooperative Mechanism for Hybrid P2p File-sharing Networks
Overlay networks, such as P2P, Grid, and CDN, have been widely deployed over physical IP networks. Since simultaneous overlay networks compete for network resources and their selfish behaviors disrupt each other, we consider cooperative mechanisms for overlay networks to enhance the collective performance and improve the QoS at the application level. In this paper, we proposed a cooperative mec...
متن کاملImpact of Legal Threats on Online Music Sharing Activity: an Analysis of Music Industry Legal Actions*
The music industry has repeatedly expressed concerns over potentially devastating impacts of online music sharing. Initial attempts to control online file sharing have been primarily through consumer education and legal action against the operators of networks that facilitated file sharing. Recent legal action against individual file sharers marked an unprecedented shift in the industry’s strat...
متن کاملDemand and Supply-side Dynamics of Piracy Diffusion in P2P Networks
Digital piracy, the sharing files of music on peer-to-peer (P2P) networks has been cited as the key threat to the music industry by distorting promoting plans of albums (Billboard.biz, 2009). To combat widespread digital piracy on file-sharing networks, the content industries have employed diverse anti-piracy strategies including pollution technologies and stronger copyright legislation for mus...
